HOLY CROSS (7-6 in 2015)
Coach: Bob Bronger (first season).
Starters back: Offense 4, defense 6.
Class: A, District 3
Players to watch: Senior Michael Pardue has been the team’s leading tackler the past two seasons at linebacker, and now he’ll get a chance to play more on offense as well. Expect to see him play H-back, wide receiver and even some tight end. Senior James Wheatley will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines this season.
Other top players: QB Jarren McDonald (So.), RB/LB Mario Convenuto (Jr.).
Outlook: In coming back to Holy Cross for his second stint, Bronger inherits a situation new to him. “I’ve never really had a team that was 50 percent freshmen,” he said. Of the 43 kids currently on the squad, only four are seniors. The young Cougars must find a way to replace the production of long-time starters Alec Greenwell at quarterback (1,626 yards passing) and running back Evan Perry (1,523 yards rushing). The veteran coach plans to implement an offense that will allow the Cougars to take advantage of McDonald’s scrambling ability as well as the power running options that Convenuto and Pardue will provide. “The kids have adapted to what we’re doing,” he said.
