Cordia tops Murray for All 'A' Classic crown

Anthony Nelson posted 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks to lead the Cordia High School boys basketball team to a 62-45 victory over Murray in Sunday’s championship game of the All “A” Classic state tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Ramon Mercado added 12 points and six rebounds and Kareem McDonald pitched in 11 points, five rebounds and three assists in leading Cordia (14-6) to its first All “A” title. Nelson was named the tournament’s MVP.

Coached by former University of Kentucky star Rodrick Rhodes, Cordia currently is on probation and ineligible for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s tournament this season.

James Boone, a Samford University signee, had 12 points to lead Murray (19-5). The Tigers shot just 25 percent (15 of 60).

All “A” events are limited to the 120 smallest high schools in the state, based on enrollment in grades 9-12.
