Fans voted Mercy basketball’s Josie Woods the winner of The Courier-Journal Metro Louisville Athlete of the Week Award presented by Norton Sports Health.
The junior hit seven 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead the Jaguars to a 56-42 victory over Highlands on Jan. 23 in the Raatz Fence/O’Shea’s Basketball Classic.
Last week’s other nominees included Kentucky Country Day’s J.R. Mathis, Fern Creek’s Caroline Mefford and Christian Academy’s Emma Wesley.
Mathis hit 6 of 9 3-point tries and scored 36 points to lead the Bearcats to an 80-56 victory over Collegiate on Jan. 23 in the final of the All “A” Seventh Region Tournament.
Mefford posted 28 points and seven rebounds in a 58-50 victory over Jeffersontown on Jan. 19.
Wesley had 27 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 70-60 loss to Manual on Jan. 19.
Each Monday afternoon, four new athletes will be posted here as nominees for the Athlete of the Week Award. Voting runs through 8 p.m. Sunday. The winners will be invited to the year-end Courier-Journal Courier-Journal Kentuckiana Sports Awards Program banquet presented by Norton Sports Health.
