2016 All-State Football

Seven players who led their teams to state championships earlier this month highlight the first-team selections on The Courier-Journal’s 93rd Annual All-State Football Team.

KHSAA Class 5-A champion Bowling Green and Class 3-A winner Belfry both had three first-team selections. Class 6-A titlist Trinity had one first-team pick.

Offensive linemen Cole Bentley and Austin Dotson and defensive lineman Rayquan Horton led Belfry’s selections. Running back Jamale Carothers, defensive lineman Dalan Cofer and linebacker Justice Dingle were selected from Bowling Green. Sophomore defensive lineman Stephen Herron was Trinity’s pick.

A total of 105 ballots were returned from coaches around the state.

Included among the 26 first-team selections are 14 who have committed to NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision or Football Championship Subdivision schools.

That group includes seven players who have committed to Kentucky schools – Christian County’s Keyron Catlett and Kenneth Major and Lexington Catholic’s Woodford Lankford with Western Kentucky; Lafayette’s Walker Wood and Belfry’s Dotson with Kentucky; Belfry’s Bentley with Louisville; and Madison Central’s Landon White with Eastern Kentucky.

Here’s the full list of all-state selections. Click a first-team player’s name for a brief bio.

WAGGENER, DB

Height/weight: 5-10, 195.

Year: Junior.

College: Has a slew of scholarship offers, including from Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Tennessee, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Why he’s on the team: Speedster was hampered by an ankle injury most of the season but still recorded 58 tackles (16 solo). Also had 15 receptions for 285 yards and scored six touchdowns (three receiving, three returns). According to 247sports.com, Brents is a four-star recruit and the No. 1 prospect in Kentucky’s Class of 2018.

Coach’s take: “His stats sometimes don’t show it, but he basically just shut down one side of the field for us,” Jordan Johnson said. “He didn’t have a pass completed on him all year. He just kind of dictates the way the game goes defensively.”

South Oldham and Fern Creek are on opposite sides of the bracket and could meet in the final.

South Oldham, the reigning Eighth Region champion, is averaging 12.4 made 3-pointers per game and is shooting 42.2 percent from behind the arc. The Dragons are winning by an average margin of 21.3 points per game and are led by senior guard Joe Griffin (23.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg).

Fern Creek finished in fifth place in last week’s King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale. Junior guard Anthony Wales, who has committed to Samford University, was selected to the all-tournament team.

Also in the Mitchell Irvin Classic field will be Kentucky Country Day, North Oldham, Dixie Heights, Danville, Atherton, Shawnee.

BOWLING GREEN, DL

Height/weight: 6-1/201.

Year: Senior.

College: Considering offers from several NCAA Division II, NAIA and junior colleges.

Why he’s on the team: Was the top tackler (100 total, 71 solo) for a Bowling Green team that won the Class 5-A state championship. Ranked third on the team in tackles (93 total, 43 solo) as a junior, when he emerged in the state-final victory over Pulaski County with 10 ½ tackles and two sacks. Named the Class 5-A, District Two Player of the Year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association and was a member of the Kentucky team in the Best of the Bluegrass All-Star Game.

Coach’s take: “We knew he was a really good athlete, but the last half of last season everything started to click for him,” Kevin Wallace said. “He probably could have played linebacker, but at the high school level he could really affect the game more at defensive end than he could at linebacker because people had such a difficult time blocking him.”

Holy Cross basketball coach Mike Durham resigns

Holy Cross High School’s boys basketball team has a new coach on the sidelines.

The school announced on Tuesday afternoon that coach Mike Durham has decided to resign his positions as teacher and basketball coach due to personal reasons. Assistant coach Kent Foushee will take over as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

“I want to thank coach for his years of service and dedication to Holy Cross,” Holy Cross athletics director Jody Thornsberry said. “I truly appreciate his hard work and passion.”

Durham took over for Thornsberry ahead of the 2006-07 season, leading that team, which won just six games, to a 19-win season a year later. Durham led the Cougars to the final of the All “A” Tournament in 2011 and the Sixth Region tournament in 2007 and 2015.

Durham was coming off a 12-20 season in 2015-2016 but had the Cougars off to a 6-4 start this season. Holy Cross is set to face Apollo on the first day of the Apollo Holiday Tournament on Tuesday evening.

Oldham Co. hires Michael Fox as new head football coach

Looking for a culture change within the Oldham County High School football program, the school has plucked a new coach from one of the most storied programs in the state.

Oldham Co. athletic director David Letendre confirmed on Tuesday that Trinity assistant coach Michael Fox would become the new head coach of the Colonels. Fox coached Trinity’s linebackers in two of the last three seasons, including helping Trinity to a 6-A state title and an undefeated season in 2016.

“Ten years ago, Oldham County was one of the more competitive teams in the state, and it’s just been a drought,” Letendre said. “It’s not as much wins and losses, but the culture and attitude. We want winning to be an expectation and I think he brings that.

“His father and father-in-law are coaches as well so he’s got a long list of coaching lineage in his genes. We brought him in for an interview and he had a lot of good ideas about our specific issues.”

Fox takes over for Mike Shatzer, whom the school parted ways with following the 2016 season. Shatzer had just completed his third year as head coach of the Colonels.

Fox, a former two-star athlete at Hanover College in football and baseball, coached and taught at his alma mater Bullitt East prior to joining Trinity’s staff.

Fox has connections with Oldham Co. Schools superintendent Greg Schultz from Schultz’s time as superintendent of Bullitt Co. Schools. Some current Oldham Co. teachers helped lead to his interest in the coaching position.

“Schultz had great things to say (about Fox),” Letendre said.

Fox is expected to meet with returning Colonel football players on January 4 and hold an informal meet-and-great with the parents afterward. He’s expected to be formally introduced during the boys-girls basketball doubleheader between South Oldham and Oldham Co. on January 6.

South Oldham’s Devin Young shoots near South Laurel’s Caleb Taylor during their quarter-final round of the Sweet 16 in Lexington. March 18, 2016

STORIES

South Oldham’s boys basketball team, and Devin Young in particular, had a night to remember.

In the final game of the first day of action at the Mitchell Irvin Classic, Young went off for a career-high 40 points in a 110-67 rout of Shawnee. Young hit nine 3-pointers, one shy of Trent Bouvet’s school record, and was four points shy of Alex Taylor’s record of 44 points in a single game.

Perhaps more impressively, Young scored all 40 of his points in the first three quarters before he was rested for the final quarter. He also finished with seven assists.

“Our ball movement was really good,” South Oldham head coach Steve Simpson said. “Our guys were really focused on finding the open guy and Devin Young was really hot in the first half. Our guys did a good job finding him.”

Young though wasn’t the only player to have a phenomenal shooting night.

Playing in the Ashland Invitational Bullitt East’s Luke Ezell exploded for a career-high 42 points in the Chargers’ 96-57 win over Bracken Co. Ezell hit 10 of 11 from 3-point range, a school record.

“He is a great distributer and he does a fantastic job of running our team and getting people the ball in places where we score,” Bullitt East coach Jason Couch said. “In the first half we were a little flat and he took it on himself to take more shots. We’ve talked about him needing to take shots more and he was the guy who kept us in it. He got off to such a really hot start and once he kind of just got in that zone where he was real confident and they were trying to do a defensive job on some of the other guys and playing off (Ezell), he kept taking good shots and he had one of those nights where he couldn’t miss.”

Ezell came into the game averaging 12.6 points per game but averaged just above 26 percent from beyond the arc.

Collins track star Karas commits to Virginia

One of Kentucky’s most decorate cross country athletes is heading to the East Coast to continue her running career.

Collins High School’s athletics department announced on Thursday afternoon via their official Twitter account that Gabriella Karas has committed to the University of Virginia.

“I took one of my official visits there and after my official visit it was where I wanted to go,” Karas said in a phone interview. “It was a beautiful school and I liked the team and the coach.”

Karas also had interest from Ole Miss, South Carolina, Kentucky, NC State, and her sister Caterina’s alma mater Xavier among other schools.

The senior won her first cross country state title as a seventh grader in 2011 and won each of the next three events, cementing her status as one of the top runners in the state and region. Following her fourth state title, USA TODAY named her Kentucky Girls Cross Country Rookie of the Year and Karas competed at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego in December 2014, finishing in ninth place overall with a time of 17:56.43.

“It was definitely something I would never have expected, and even when it was happening I couldn’t process it from the start,” Karas said. “But as I’ve gotten older and been injured the past year, I’m fortunate I was able to compete at a younger age, because you never know if you’ll get injured. So I was glad I got four years.”

Karas not only won those four consecutive state titles in cross country but also has three of the four best times at Kentucky Horse Park. Karas set the 5,000 meter run record at the Paddock Course in 2012 with a time of 17:44.18, and then broke her own record a year later with a time of 17:39.04.

“She’s been a winner in all senses of the word since she was young, younger than most kids could think of, and she’s just that talented,” Collins track and field coach Sean Roberts said. “She’s got a big heart too which makes it fun to watch her run and win. It makes the sport more enjoyable when she’s in the race.”

Coming off her impressive four-year run, injuries and illness have kept Karas from defending her state titles in cross country and track and field. Karas suffered from shin splints in the 2015 fall season and then later suffered a concussion in a car accident that kept her out the 2016 spring track and field season.

She was recovering in time to compete in the regional and state tournaments this past fall during cross country but after feeling hip pain, an MRI disclosed that she had a stress fracture at the top of her hip, ruling her out for a minimum of eight weeks.

“Running is all a mental game,” Karas said. “If you want it in your heart bad enough you can come back from anything.”

Karas revealed that she was cleared on Thursday to begin rehabbing her hip injury, but she said she’s going to take it slow in the recovery process.

“It depends how everything goes and because of where my stress fracture was, I don’t want to mess around with it,” Karas said of competing in track and field events this spring. “But I’m not in a rush to compete this year. Of course I want to get in some races before I get to college but I’m not in a rush to do indoor (track). I’m going to take my time completely healing and getting back into shape.”

Karas plans to sign her letter-of-intent on April 1 when the signing period reopens.

Recovering from recent injury, three time state cross country champion Gabby Karas of Collins High School, crosses the finish line for third place in the North Class 2A Region 3 Girls Cross Country Championship with a time of 19:39:06. 31 Oct 2015 31 Oct 2015

Ballard tops Calloway Co. for Wes Unseld title

Devante Parker treated Chris Renner with a trip to South Beach. Meanwhile, Renner’s now head coach-less team, the red-hot Ballard High School boys basketball team, treated acting coach Ray Klein to a championship.

Behind a double-double from tournament MVP Vonnie Patterson, the Bruins rolled to a 78-48 win over the Calloway County Lakers on Thursday night in the final of the eight-team Wes Unseld Classic at Seneca High School.

Renner, one of the longest-tenured coaches in the metro area, told his team after Wednesday’s semifinal win that he wouldn’t be with them Thursday because Parker, who was an All-Stater in his prep days at Ballard, got him tickets for Sunday’s NFL game in Miami.

So Klein and Patterson, who had 19 points by halftime thanks to a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter, took control.

“They’ve got a lot of faith in me, so I was just taking good shots,” Patterson said of his teammates looking for him. “I wasn’t trying to force it a whole lot, so I was just trying to get my best shot.”

Patterson had 15 points in the quarterfinals and 16 in the semifinals before finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals in the title game.

“He’s just been phenomenal,” Klein said of Patterson. “His strength is he can play at all three levels, but he’s even scoring inside for us. Vonnie’s just playing great, he really is.”

Although the Bruins (8-2) put up another great point total — they’ve scored at least 76 points in each of their last five games — they didn’t get off to a great start. Ballard missed six of its first seven shots from the field, but relied on its speed, athleticism and aggression to keep the Lakers (9-4) at bay.

When Ballard couldn’t make a basket, Calloway County couldn’t find it. The Lakers, who entered the night tied with Graves County for the First Region lead in wins, turned it over eight times in its first 10 trips down the floor as Ballard built a 9-3 lead before heating up.

“We score a lot off our defense and that’s where we get most of our points from is our defense. Our defense turns into transition buckets and that’s how we like to play is fast,” Patterson said.

Calloway County almost went into the second quarter within striking distance, but Ballard reserve freshman guard Larelle Coleman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bruins a 17-10 lead.

Back-to-back baskets by senior guard Kamden Price cut the Bruins’ lead to 20-17 early in the second quarter. Ballard called timeout and turned up the heat as Klein told his team to get back to playing the way it was accustomed to under Renner.

“That’s the way we play. We’re pretty quick and that’s our advantage over people,” said Klein, the longtime assistant who is 2-0 the past two seasons and 3-0 in the last six years when he’s had to take over as acting coach. “We’re not big at all and our tallest kid is Vonnie at about 6-3, so we just try to get after people, pressure and use our quickness.”

Klein said it was important to get the smaller Lakers tired out and not let Calloway County dictate the pace. The Lakers ground out a 47-43 win Wednesday in the semifinals against Seneca and had held seven opponents to less than 50 points before facing the Bruins.

“We tried to get to their legs and then in the third quarter is where it started to pay some dividends. That’s where it really paid off,” Klein said. “That’s what the first half was. We tried to hound them.”

GIRLS

Eastern 55, Ryle 53

A day after scoring her 1,000th career point, Eastern High School girls basketball player Briana Mishler followed up a strong performance with another MVP-worthy performance on Thursday.

Mishler scored 21 points to lead the Eagles to a 55-53 win over the Raiders, giving Eastern the Lake Cumberland Holiday Hoops Classic title. Mishler was named the tournament MVP following the game.

“She’s always been able to shoot it but she hasn’t been able to put consistent quarters together,” Eastern coach Josh Leslie said. “But now it’s looking like the Bri we expected to see. We’re finding ways for her to be open in spots and our kids are doing a good job getting it to her, getting her feet set and hitting shots.”

The junior guard broke the 1,000 point mark on Wednesday late in Eastern’s 70-62 win over Pulaski Southwestern. She scored 24 points in that game.

Following the game, Pulaski Co.’s athletics director discovered that Mishler had broken the millennium mark and secured the game ball. It was presented to Mishler prior to starting lineup announcements on Thursday evening.

“I thought that was pretty unique and a great gesture,” Leslie said. “It was a good week for her.”

Miami Country Day 84, Sacred Heart 62

Mishler wasn’t the only local shooter to break the 1,000 point mark.

On Thursday evening, Sacred Heart junior guard Grace Berger broke the 1,000-point mark of her career on a 3-pointer from the right wing in the Valkyries defeat to Miami Country Day.

“Grace becomes the 23rd player in Sacred Heart basketball to join the 1,000-point club,” Sacred Heart coach Donna Moir said. “She’s a very talented player and has worked extremely hard on her game. She is an unselfish player and I look forward to seeing what else she can accomplish during her career at Sacred Heart.”

Berger is committed to Indiana University.

Sacred Heart’s Asia Seidt competes in the 200 yard Individual Medley at the KHSAA Swim & Diving Championship. Seidt would not only win the race but set a state record. Feb. 27, 2016

The Valkyries were named National High School Team of the Year runners-up by SwimSwam in its end of year awards, finishing behind Carmel (Ind.). Much of the praise for the Valkyries comes from their performance during the 2016 state meet.

The Valkyries recorded a total of 435 points in winning the state meet, 167 points more than second-place Notre Dame Academy. A senior class filled with Division I recruits did most of the damage at the tournament, along with then-junior and Stanford commit Brooke Forde. Asia Seidt and Forde each won two events, with Seidt setting state records in the 100 yard backstroke (52.89) and 200 yard individual medley (1:56.83) and Forde setting a state mark in the 200 yard freestyle (1:46.76).

Seidt, now at Kentucky, Kennedy Lohman, now at Arizona, Brooke Bauer, now at North Carolina, and then-sophomore Tonner DeBeer also combined to set a national record in the 200 yard medley relay (1:40.61).

Trinity forward David Burton tries to slow down the driving Fern Creek guard Chance Moore on his way to the basket. 18 December 2016

The two hottest boys basketball teams from the city over the first five weeks of the season wrapped up the top two seeds for next week’s Republic Bank Louisville Invitational Tournament.

Top-seeded Fern Creek and No. 2 Trinity – both off to 12-1 starts – lead the way for the tournament to be held Jan. 9-14 at Valley High School.

The event will include the top 20 teams from the Sixth and Seventh regions in the SETH Power Rankings, a system created by Jefferson County Public Schools director of athletics Jerry Wyman.

No. 3 Doss (10-5) and No. 4 Ballard (8-2) round out the top four seeds.

Fern Creek enjoyed a strong showing in its two Christmas tournament, taking fifth place in the Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale and capturing the title in the Mitchell Irvin Classic, beating host South Oldham 80-67 in Thursday’s final.

The Tigers beat Trinity 65-61 on Dec. 10 before falling to the Shamrocks 66-63 on Dec. 18 in the quarterfinals of the KOB. Four players are averaging double figures in scoring – senior Chance Moore (18.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and junior Anthony Wales (14.4 ppg), Ahmad Price (13.2 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Tony Rogers (10.3 ppg).

Trinity is on a nine-game winning streak since its loss to Fern Creek, winning the championships at the KOB and the Arby’s Classic in Bristol, Tennessee. The Shamrocks beat Chattanooga (Tennessee) McCallie 69-50 in Saturday’s final of the Arby’s Classic.

The Shamrocks are led by junior Jay Scrubb (15.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg), senior Lukas Burkman (14.1 ppg) and sophomore David Johnson (12.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg). Johnson was named the MVP in the KOB and the Arby’s Classic.

Manual (2-9) was the last team to make the LIT field, according to the SETH Rankings. The first two teams left out were Collegiate (11-4) and Kentucky Country Day (4-6).

Ballard is the defending LIT champion, beating Trinity 58-54 in last year’s final.

Male High School junior Emilia Sexton announced she has committed to Butler University. The 5-foot-4 guard is averaging 13.8 points per game for Male (11-1).

Manual pulls away late from Eastern

Despite losing two starters off last year’s Seventh Region champions, the Manual High School girls basketball team looks ready to defend its title.

Manual Lady Crimsons head basketball coach Jeff Sparks huddles with his players. 10 March, 2016

Manual Lady Crimsons head basketball coach Jeff Sparks huddles with his players. 10 March, 2016

Tuesday night the Crimsons continued to show their mettle, pulling out a 52-47 win at Eastern. Manual (11-2) trailed most of the game, but outscored the Eagles 6-0 in the final 57 seconds for its seventh win in seven games against Seventh Region foes so far this season.

“We’re showing toughness and I think really that’s been the big thing for us this early,” Crimsons coach Jeff Sparks said. “We’ve had some close games here recently, even in the tournament in Lexington before Christmas. We’ve had to just find some ways to win, even when it’s not pretty, even when it’s not going our way all the time.”

It wasn’t pretty, especially from the free-throw line, for Manual, which was ranked No. 11 in The Courier-Journal’s preseason coaches poll, against Eastern. The Crimsons were only 16 for 34 (47.1 percent) from the foul line. However, they hit 4 of 6 in the final 32 seconds after Tonysha Curry’s put-back with 57 seconds left gave them a one-point lead.

Curry exemplified Manual’s struggles from the not-so-charitable stripe. The 5-foot-10 senior guard was only 2-for-12 from free-throw line. However, she made up for that in her all-around play, totaling 11 points, 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists.

“We weren’t making a lot of shots. I know me personally, I missed a lot of free throws, but we had to keep our heads and remember to stay aggressive,” Curry said. “We can’t control if the ball goes in or out, but we can control energy and we can control effort, so that’s what we had to focus on.”

In their first game since a 63-62 loss to St. Joseph Central Catholic (Ohio) on Dec. 29 (six days after they lost to No. 1 Butler, 62-50 in the final of the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic in Lexington), the Crimsons looked a little lethargic early. They trailed No. 17 Eastern 18-10 in the second quarter before Jaela Johnson single-handedly got Manual back in the game. The 5-5 junior guard accounted for 10 straight points – with a 3-pointer, a free throw, two coast-to-coast layups and an assist – to give the Crimsons a 20-18 lead.

It didn’t last long, though. The Eagles tied the game at halftime, then scored the first seven points of the second half to open up a lead they wouldn’t relinquish until late.

Nila Blackford hit 1 of 2 free throws with 2:13 left to give the Crimsons a 46-45 lead – its first since late in the second quarter. Eastern, though, answered on its ensuing possession thanks to a step-back jumper by Bri Mishler, who tallied a team-high 14 points.

However Curry’s put-back on Manual’s next possession gave the visitors the lead for good. After an Eagles’ turnover, Johnson hit 2 of 4 free throws following a personal foul and a technical foul on Eastern’s Breanna Anthony. Then, following an Eagles’ miss, Tyonne Howard hit a pair of free throws to ice it for the Crimsons.

“Down the stretch we were able to get a couple of stops and we weren’t great from the free-throw line, but we were hitting enough at the end,” Sparks said.

Johnson finished with a game-high 19 points while Blackford added 12 points and nine rebounds for Manual, which shot 47.2 percent (17 for 36) from the field and out-rebounded the Eagles 39-28.

Sophomore Mikayla Kinnard added 10 points and six rebounds for Eastern (9-4), which shot 32.7 percent (18 of 55) from the field, including only 28.6 percent (8 for 28) in the second half. Despite that the Eagles had the lead most of the game, but could never pull away from the Crimsons.

“We just could never get a bucket, a stop and a bucket,” Eastern coach Josh Leslie said. “We had a lead, but we couldn’t get it to where it was two possessions. It was one possession and they’d keep battling and then we don’t do a very good job of rebounding and we just foul them. We’re lucky they missed free throws…We gift-wrapped that one. I feel like Santa Claus.”
