After 500 victories and 19 seasons as Ballard High School’s boys basketball coach, Chris Renner is at the point of his career when his former assistants are branching out and trying to beat him.

Fern Creek’s James Schooler accomplished the feat Tuesday.

Ahmad Price scored 32 points and Chance Moore added 21 as Fern Creek defeated Ballard 87-82 in the fifth-place game of the Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale.

Schooler was an assistant under Renner at Ballard for two seasons before taking the Fern Creek job in 2013. Schooler had lost his first two matchups against Renner, falling twice last season.

Tuesday’s victory was Fern Creek’s first over Ballard since a 68-63 win on Jan. 18, 2006, snapping a nine-game skid to the Bruins.

“It means a lot to me because Chris has taught me so much about being a man, a Christian and a coach,” Schooler said. “We talk several times a week, and he always jokes with me. I know he’s a really good coach, so I know I always have to come prepared. This meant a lot.”

No. 8 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches, Fern Creek (9-1) finished 3-1 in the KOB with victories over No. 7 Christian County, No. 22 Franklin-Simpson and No. 6 Ballard (5-2).

“This schedule has paid off,” Schooler said. “Having to play top-rated teams that don’t beat themselves eventually starts to mold your team to withstand runs toward the end of the game.”

Clivonte Patterson scored 28 points to lead Ballard, and Jamil Wilson added 18 before going out with an ankle injury at the 1:08 mark of the fourth quarter.

Renner, who picked up his 500th victory at Ballard on Monday against Acworth (Ga.) Allatoona, said his young team showed fatigue in the second half against Fern Creek.

“We just had some mental breakdowns,” Renner said. “They did some things to beat us, and we did some things to beat ourselves.”

Down 64-63 after three quarters, Fern Creek took the lead for good on Anthony Wales’ 3-pointer that made it 66-64 at the 7:39 mark of the fourth.

Ballard pulled within one point on four occasions and trailed just 79-76 after two Delonta Wimberly free throws with 2:36 left. But Moore scored five straight points for the Tigers for an 84-76 edge with 1:13 remaining

Price said the victory was for Schooler.

“We did it for Coach Schooler because it was his old school,” Price said. “He wanted to beat them really bad, and we haven’t beaten Ballard since I’ve been at Fern Creek.”

Covington Catholic 67, Bowling Green 50: C.J. Fredrick scored 34 points and Cole VonHandorf added 17 to lead the No. 5 Colonels (8-2) over the No. 1 Purples (7-2).

Fredrick hit 11 of 15 shots, including 4 of 6 3-point tries, and 8 of 12 free throws. Covington Catholic shot 60.5 percent (23 of 38) and outscored Bowling Green 32-18 in the second half after leading 35-32 at halftime.

Eighth-grader Zion Harmon scored 15 points to lead the Purples.

Christian County 68, Doss 60: Jaylen Sebree scored 19 points and Cory Trice added 18 as the No. 7 Colonels (9-1) beat the No. 11 Dragons (5-4) in the consolation-bracket final.

With the score tied at 47, Christian County put together a 9-1 run to take a 56-48 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Doss never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Terez Traynor scored 18 points to lead the Dragons.

Kentuckiana’s premier cross country runners truly distanced themselves from the competition in 2016.

The 2016-17 Courier-Journal All-Area Cross Country Teams

The 2016-17 Courier-Journal All-Area Cross Country Teams

The Courier-Journal’s Metro Louisville and Southern Indiana boys and girls all-area cross country teams are stacked with runners who set the pace and stood out in crowded fields, and the finalists for runner of the year awards each left an impression at the state championship.

Finalists for The Courier-Journal Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year are Manual’s Yared Nuguse, Holy Cross’ Keeton Thornsberry, Christian Academy of Indiana’s Skylar Stidam and Silver Creek’s Cameron Stephens.

Nuguse, a senior, won the Class 3-A state championship with a time of 15 minutes, 41.13 seconds. He has signed with Notre Dame.

Thornsberry, a sophomore, won the Class A state title with a time of 16 minutes, 16.25 seconds.

Stidam, who qualified for state as an individual, finished with a time of 15:51.6, good for third place. The junior’s final 1K time was the quickest in the field at 3:06.

Stephens placed 39th (16:31.1) as an individual in the state race and was named an Indiana senior all-star.

Finalists for The Courier-Journal Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year are Manual’s Alena Sapienza-Wright, Male’s Kaitlyn Lacy, Christian Academy of Indiana’s McKenna Cavanaugh and New Washington’s Olivia Graebe.

Sapienza-Wright, a junior and last year’s Courier-Journal Metro Louisville Cross Country Runner of the Year, won the Class 3-A state championship with a time of 18 minutes, 8.87 seconds.

Kaitlyn Lacy, a junior, was the runner-up in the Class 3-A state meet with a time of 18 minutes, 9.70 seconds.

Cavanaugh ran her way to a first-place finish in this year’s regional race and went on to place 56th as an individual at state.

Graebe was New Washington’s first sectional-winning runner in more than 25 years. She went on to qualify and place 94th in the state race.

Each all-area selection and finalist, along with a guest, will be invited to this June’s The Courier-Journal Sports Awards Ceremony presented by Norton Sports Health. There, Athlete of the Year winners and other special awards will be announced.

Visit courier-journal.com/sportsawards for all-area teams and upcoming announcements regarding how to RSVP, the ceremony’s date, its location and the celebrity guest speaker.

Bullitt East wins Best in Hoops tournament

It’s a new cast of characters this year for the Bullitt East High School boys basketball team, but so far the results have been about the same as previous years.

Bullitt East's Jared Osborne looks for an open lane against Waggener. 12/21/16

Bullitt East’s Jared Osborne looks for an open lane against Waggener. 12/21/16

Jared Osborne scored 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter to lead the Chargers, the No. 25 team in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings, to a come-from-behind 68-55 victory over Waggener in the Best in Hoops Tournament championship at Oldham County High School Wednesday night.

The Chargers (8-3) used a 17-3 run in the third quarter to change the course of the game. It came after the Wildcats scored the first two buckets of the quarter, extending their lead to 34-27. That prompted a quick timeout from Chargers coach Jason Couch. As he huddled his team together, he urged them to wake up. The first-year coach even stomped his foot a couple times to emphasize that point.

GALLERY | Bullitt East vs. Waggener

Bullitt East was down to just 10 players Wednesday as personal reasons and injuries popped up. Derrick Donigan, who scored 15 against Waggener in Saturday’s 69-66 home win, had a family emergency. Konnor Polson, who added eight Saturday, hurt his hand in Tuesday’s semifinal versus DeSales and did not play Wednesday.

Couch said he thought his players may have been ready to succumb to that early in the third, which is why he called the timeout.

“They came out with the energy we needed (after the timeout),” Couch said. “I was just so proud of them.”

After Waggener tied the game at 36, the Chargers finished the third on a 12-1 run. Osborne scored the final seven points, including a run-out layup in the waning seconds to make it 48-37.

While Bullitt East caught fire, the Wildcats could not break through the 1-2-2 zone defense Couch employed. Sophomore Jaago Kalakon led the Wildcats (6-4) with 23 points, with nine coming in the first quarter, but the others struggled early. Jacquess Hobbs finished with 15 points, but 10 came in the fourth quarter, after the Chargers had built the lead to 16 points.

“They did a good job defensively, really packed it in against us,” Waggener coach Bryan O’Neill said. “You try to penetrate and it’s just tough. We didn’t make enough plays.

With the win Wednesday, Bullitt East extended its winning streak to six, and the Chargers, last year’s Sixth Region runners-up, are doing it with five new starters and a new head coach. However, Couch said he knew he was taking over a quality program with depth, even if it had been untested at the varsity level. Now, the players are starting to prove themselves on the court.

Osborne agreed.

“Definitely,” he said. “We’ve shown ourselves so far, but we just got to keep going and keep winning.”

2016-17 Courier-Journal All-Area Soccer Teams

This year’s Courier-Journal All-Area Soccer Teams are full of players who knew how to put the ball in the net – and keep it out at the other end of the field – and those in the running for the boys and girls Metro Louisville and Southern Indiana Soccer Player of the Year Awards have impressive stat sheets.

The finalists for The Courier-Journal Boys Soccer Player of the Year Award are Collegiate’s Haji Abdikadir, Trinity’s Cameron Smith, Providence’s Eli Coker and Floyd Central’s Landon Campbell.

Abdikadir, a junior, was named Kentucky’s Offensive Player of the Year after posting 40 goals and 12 assists. He has committed to the University of Louisville.

Smith, a senior, was named Kentucky’s Defensive Player of the Year after anchoring a defense that allowed just 14 goals and posted nine shutouts. Smith, who also had seven goals and three assists, has signed with the University of Louisville.

A senior, Coker scored 31 goals – good for a share of 12th in Indiana – and added 12 assists in leading the Pioneers to a Class 1A state runner-up finish.

Campbell recorded 24 goals for the Highlanders as a senior and helped lead Floyd Central to its fourth consecutive sectional title.

The finalists for The Courier-Journal Girls Soccer Player of the Year Award are Sacred Heart’s Cassie Amshoff, Collegiate’s Regan Kommor, Floyd Central’s Gracie Fitzgerald and New Albany’s Kat Walker.

Amshoff, a junior who has committed to the University of Louisville, was named West Player of the Year (regions 1-8) after posting 23 goals and nine assists for the Valkyries.

Bullitt East’s Amber Higdonn(11) attempts to block the shot of Male’s Kyra Hogan (32) during the championship game of The Queen of The Commonwealth tournament, Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016 in Mt. Washington KY. (Timothy D. Easley/Special to the C-J)

One night after sinking the game-winner, Male High School’s Logan Calvert did her damage early Thursday night.

The 5-11 senior forward was one of four Bulldogs in score in double figures as they walloped host Bullitt East 74-53 in the Queen of the Commonwealth championship. With the win, Male – the No. 5 team in The Courier-Journal’s preseason coaches’ poll – upped its record to 9-0.

The senior scored 12 of her 13 points in the first half, nailing three 3-pointers to help the Bulldogs build a 16-point halftime advantage. Usually Calvert plays down in the low post, but the Chargers (8-4) started off in a zone defense to keep guards Ciaja Harbison and Emilia Sexton in check. That allowed Calvert, who made 4 of 10 3-pointers in her first seven games this season, to get open on the perimeter.

“Logan truly can score inside and out,” Male coach Champ Ligon said. “She’s one of our best finishers on the inside. (But) if you leave her out there and you don’t guard her, she’s going to make you pay.”

Calvert’s final trey came with 2:59 left and gave Male a 33-21 lead. It was part of 17-4 run to end the first half, with the Bulldogs scoring the last eight points in the final 1:23 to take a 41-25 lead at the break.

“I’m not saying she can’t (shoot), but she picked a good night to be hot,” Bullitt East coach Chris Stallings said.

Harbison, who scored eight of her 16 points in the closing run, added five more in the first 82 seconds of the third quarter. Eventually, Male built a 47-28 lead with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter, but that’s when the No. 7 Chargers, spurred by their Miss Basketball candidate, made a run.

Lindsey Duvall scored 16 of her 21 points in the third quarter. At one point, she went on an 11-2 run against Male by herself. Her runner with 2:00 remaining in the third allowed Bullitt East to climb back to 51-44. However, the Chargers did not get any closer the rest of the way.

It wasn’t for lack of effort though, as Bullitt East got a couple turnovers early in the fourth quarter, but the Chargers had a stretch of six possessions in the period where their shots all rimmed out. Male made them pay, extending the lead to as much as 70-48 with 3:28 remaining.

“At halftime, coach told us they were going to come out strong,” said Calvert, who hit the game-winning shot with :02 left in Tuesday’s come-from-behind 57-56 semifinal victory over Marist (Ill.). “So, we knew we were going to react to it. We had to stay focused.”

Sexton added 14 for Male, which also got 13 from Cameron Browning. Kirstie Henn added 10 for Bullitt East.

In jumping out to a 9-0 start for the season, Male has stayed focused in pulling out some impressive victories. In addition to two against Bullitt East, the Bulldogs have earned wins against No. 1 Butler and No. 10 Covington Holmes, who they beat in a Monday quarterfinal.

Both teams now head to Florida next week for another round of holiday tournaments. Bullitt East goes to Fort Myers to play in the Queen of the Palms, and Male ventures to the Destin Holiday Classic. If the Bulldogs win their first two down in Destin, they likely will face Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI, the top-ranked team in the USA TODAY Girls’ Super 25, in the final.

Belfry defensive lineman Rayquan Horton

BELFRY, DL

Height/weight: 6-2/316.

Year: Senior.

College: Has scholarship offers from Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech, Toledo and Western Kentucky.

Why he’s on the team: One of Belfry’s top tacklers each of the past three seasons, Horton finished with 81 stops (25 solo) as a senior in helping the Pirates win their fourth straight Class 3-A state championship. Began starting for the Pirates as a freshman. Selected to the Kentucky team for the Best of the Bluegrass All-Star Game.

Coach’s take: “I don’t know if anybody has been able to block him since his freshman year,” Philip Haywood said. “If when they’d put two or three people on him, I’m not sure anybody had much success. He’s an exceptionally strong kid with a great first step.”

SOUTH WARREN, DL

Height/weight: 6-3/255.

Year: Senior.

College: Ball State.

Why he’s on the team: Recorded 56 tackles (18 solo) and one fumble recovery in helping the Spartans post a 9-4 record. Also played tight end and recorded 17 receptions for 323 yards and two touchdowns. Ranked among the state’s top prospects, Haynes also had scholarship offers from Appalachian State, Army, Eastern Michigan, Navy, Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois and Wofford.

Coach’s take: “His freshman year he was a receiver and a defensive back, and he gained probably 80 or 90 pounds and grew several inches over the course of his career,” Brandon Smith said. “Those are the best kind of defensive linemen – guys who grew up as skill players. He’s extremely athletic, and no matter who he went against he was always the most powerful guy.”

BOWLING GREEN, DL

Height/weight: 6-1/201.

Year: Senior.

College: Considering offers from several NCAA Division II, NAIA and junior colleges.

Why he’s on the team: Was the top tackler (100 total, 71 solo) for a Bowling Green team that won the Class 5-A state championship. Ranked third on the team in tackles (93 total, 43 solo) as a junior, when he emerged in the state-final victory over Pulaski County with 10 ½ tackles and two sacks. Named the Class 5-A, District Two Player of the Year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association and was a member of the Kentucky team in the Best of the Bluegrass All-Star Game.

Coach’s take: “We knew he was a really good athlete, but the last half of last season everything started to click for him,” Kevin Wallace said. “He probably could have played linebacker, but at the high school level he could really affect the game more at defensive end than he could at linebacker because people had such a difficult time blocking him.”

Coach’s take: “His leadership and willingness to fly around to the football are what stand out the most,” Ty Scroggins said. “He wills everybody else to play at a high level like himself. He was the person who would come into a room and change the linebackers’ mentality about how to play. They all wanted to play like him.”

Coach’s take: “He’s 100 percent dependable,” Scott Carmony said. “Everybody knows exactly what you’re going to get from Bryce. You tell him something one time and he’s got it – and he’s usually got it just about perfect. … I think the (Mid-American Conference) is a great fit for him. Coach’s take: “Devonta was such a big weapon for us this year because I’d say 95 percent of his kickoffs went in the end zone,” Lewis said. “As a punter, he flipped the field just about every time he kicked the ball. He had a 64-yard punt against Central Hardin that changed the complexion of that whole game.”

L-R: Manual defensive back Keon Farris, Manual outside linebacker Andre Teague, Jr. and Manual defensive back Bryce Cosby can’t catch Male wide receiver Nathan Hobbs who scores the only touchdown of the 1st half with just 23.4 seconds to play. 21 October 2016

Male coach Chris Wolfe confirmed on Friday evening that Hobbs had committed to the Illinois. Hobbs had previously committed to Western Kentucky in November.

Illinoishead coach Lovie Smith made an in-home visit to Hobbs in Louisville recently according to Wolfe and Fighting Illini defensive backs coach Paul Williams led the recruitment.

It’s a double-dose of good news for Hobbs. On Friday, Hobbs was also named first-team all-state in the Courier-Journal’s All-State football team. Hobbs had 33 tackles (21 solo), two interceptions and one fumble recovery on defense and offensively he had 23 receptions for 361 yards and scored 10 total touchdowns; five in the air, two on punt returns, one kickoff return, one fumble return and one interception return.

“In my 18 years of coaching, he’s one of the top two or three most athletic kids I’ve had,” Wolfe said about Hobbs’ selection to the All-State squad. “Obviously he has the speed and quickness, but he also has great leaping ability and the ability to adjust to the ball. He also has a great wingspan and body control. He has the whole package to play cornerback or a slot receiver.”

Jaelynn Penn committed to Indiana University.

Jaelynn Penn committed to Indiana University.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – If there were any concerns about the Butler High School girls basketball team after a season-opening loss to Male, the Bearettes are well on their way to putting them to rest.

Butler on Friday completed an impressive run through the prestigious Traditional Bank Holiday Classic, beating Manual 62-50 in the championship game at Lexington Catholic.

No. 1 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches and the defending state champion, Butler (9-1) has won nine straight since falling to Male 68-62 on Nov. 29.

“I think it humbled us a little bit and helped us realize we have to bring it every single game,” senior guard Bre Torrens said. “That’s what we’ve been trying to do since then.”

Indiana University signee Jaelynn Penn posted 18 points and five steals in the championship game and earned tournament MVP honors. Torrens and Tasia Jeffries both scored 10 points, and Molly Lockhart added nine points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Butler shot 54.3 percent (25 of 46), including 9 of 18 from 3-point range. Jeffries hit 3 of 7 3-point attempts.

“We shot the ball really well this week,” Torrens said. “Hopefully we can keep that up.”

Jaela Johnson scored 19 points to lead Manual, and sophomore Nila Blackford continued to show she could have a breakout season with 13 points and six rebounds.

No. 11 Manual (10-1) suffered its first loss of the season, but coach Jeff Sparks said he was impressed with his squad’s 4-1 mark in the tournament, including wins over No. 15 East Carter and No. 4 Sacred Heart.

“(Butler) is a great basketball team, and this was a tremendous opportunity to see where we are at against a team like that,” Sparks said. “I thought we competed well.”

The first half included eight lead changes before Butler closed it with a 13-4 run, capped by a Teri Goodlett 3-pointer that gave the Bearettes a 37-29 halftime edge.

Torrens started the second half with a 3-pointer for a 40-29 lead before Manual battled back, pulling with 47-43 on Blackford’s 3-point play with 7:19 remaining.

But Penn scored five straight points and Jeffries nailed a 3-pointer during an 8-0 run that gave Butler a 55-43 lead with 5:45 left. Manual never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

“They shot the ball, and we missed a few rotations on our end that we’ll need to be better at down the road,” Sparks said. “We need to continue to improve our defense and figure out how to guard teams with great shooters like Butler has. This was a way for us to see what works and what doesn’t.”

* Ryle 70, Sacred Heart 65: The Raiders (6-7) scored the final six points of overtime to beat the No. 4 Valkyries (7-2) in the third-place game.

Lauren Schwartz (22 points, nine rebounds), Maddie Scherr (21 points, eight rebounds) and Jaiden Douthit (18 points) had big games for the Raiders.

Grace Berger paced Sacred Heart with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
