Ballard senior Jamil Danzy was named the Special Olympics Male Athlete of the Year on Tuesday at The Courier-Journal Kentuckiana Sports Awards Banquet presented by Norton Sports Health.
Danzy has been a standout athlete since joining the Special Olympics program as an 8-year-old in 2006. He has participated with the Pitt Sports program, competing in basketball, softball, soccer, flag football, bowling and alpine skiing; and with his Ballard High School team in the Jefferson County Public Schools Unified Basketball League, which teams traditional Special Olympics athletes with fellow students without disabilities for competition.
Danzy has helped lead Ballard to three league titles in four years — including a championship in 2016 — and has scored more than 100 points in four league championship games. Jamil has also represented Special Olympics Kentucky at the national level, competing in basketball at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey.
