Chris Peters, the offensive coordinator at Shawnee High School last season, has been named the head football coach at Iroquois.

The 28-year-old Peters is the older brother of Corey Peters, the former University of Kentucky star and current Arizona Cardinals nose tackle who missed all of the 2015 season with an Achilles injury.

Chris Peters is a 2005 graduate of Central High School and a 2009 graduate of the University of Louisville. He was in the real-estate business when he said he caught the coaching bug.

“I was coaching wrestling, and I had a kid who was in trouble all the time,” Peters said. “We managed to work through some things together, and he came back and told me that if it wasn’t for me, he never would have gone to college.

“At times, the real-estate company I was working for was just boring. So I went back and got my teaching certification. … The whole reason I got into coaching was to have an impact on some kids’ lives, and now I have that opportunity.”

Peters coached at Noe Middle School from 2012-14 before heading to Shawnee last season.

At Iroquois he’ll replace Preston King, who stepped down last November after posting a 15-8 record in two seasons. Peters said he hopes to have a long run as Iroquois’ coach.

“They haven’t had anyone consistent to build a long-term program here,” Peters said. “They’ve had some good teams, but I’m prepared to implement a program. I have no interest in going anywhere else. I’m only 28 … and I live only a couple of minutes from the school. It’s the perfect set-up for what I want to do.”
