Murray tops Owensboro Catholic for All 'A' Classic title

Maddie Waldrop and Macey Turley both scored 14 points to lead the Murray High School girls basketball team to a 45-28 victory over Owensboro Catholic on Sunday in the championship game of the All “A” Classic state tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Turley, who also had four rebounds, three assists and three steals, was named the tournament’s MVP. Murray (24-1) – No. 11 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings – won its first All “A” title and extended the state’s longest winning streak to 18.

Murray won the rebounding battle 32-25 and dominated in points in the paint (28-8). Leading 30-21 after three quarters, Murray outscored Owensboro Catholic 15-7 in the fourth to pull away.

Murray was the All “A” runner-up last season, falling to Covington Holy Cross 47-46 in the final.

Emily Marshall scored 11 points to lead Owensboro Catholic (20-5), which shot just 22.7 percent (10 of 44).

All “A” events are limited to the 120 smallest high schools in the state, based on enrollment in grades 9-12.
