Sacred Heart dominates Jefferson County Invitational - Edlin takes medalist honors with 1-over 35

It was a roller coaster of a round of golf for Taylor Edlin on Monday afternoon. But like any good ride, it left her happy and with a smile on her face.

The Sacred Heart sophomore shot a 1-over-par 35 to claim medalist honors in the Jefferson County Invitational at Shawnee Golf Course.

“That just makes it a good day,” Edlin said, clutching her trophy afterward.

The fact that her team also took home some hardware made it even better.

Led by Edlin, the Valkyries swept the top four places, carding a collective 143 (10 shots better than their winning total last year), as they cruised to the team title. Manual finished second with a 179 while Mercy took third with a 186.

Edlin’s nine-hole round, which began on the par-3 fourth hole, started “a little bit rocky,” she said, with a four-putt, double-bogey.

“So I kind of had a negative mind-frame starting out,” she said.

Edlin quickly turned positive, though. After parring the next two holes she birdied Nos. 7 and 8, then chipped in from 90 yards out for an eagle on No. 9. She carried her momentum over to the start of the course, birdieing the par-5 first — to drop to 3-under.

“Then, after that, it went downhill again,” Edlin said.

A couple of bad chips, one out of the bunker, were followed by a three-putt as she carded a seven on the par-4 second. She ended her round with a bogey on the par-4 third to finish at 1-over, which helped her edge three teammates by one shot for the low score.

“I did some really good stuff today, besides not putting,” said Edlin, who tied for fourth last year with a 38. “I was making some great approach shots, some were within 10 feet, so that made it nice. (I’d have) a nice, easy 2-putt for par and an okay putt for birdie. I’m pretty happy with my approach shots. I don’t think I could have done it if I didn’t have those.”

The Sacred Heart trio of senior Morgan Tinsley, junior Erin Rowland and freshman Jacqueline Steier all tied for second with 2-over 36s.

Brown sophomore Ava Dillow was the top non-Valkyries finisher, shooting a 37 — the same score as Sacred Heart junior Ryan Bender.

Edlin hopes the Valkyries’ dominance Monday gives them plenty of mojo heading into the final stretch of the season as they chase their 10th team championship. Sacred Heart had its streak of four straight state titles snapped last year, when it finished sixth.

“The team’s doing really good. We all can go pretty low, so I’m excited for State,” said Edlin, who finished 57th at State last year and is currently 38th in the all-state point standings. “I think we have a really good shot at winning and I hope we can get back on our streak again. So I’m excited for that.”
