BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The mountain men from Belfry High School – led by a mountainous offensive line – showcased their old-school rushing attack and entered the record book Saturday night.

The Pirates rushed for 407 yards and didn’t bother attempting a pass on their way to a 52-31 victory over Central in the Class 3-A state football championship game.

A crowd of 4,685 fans at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium saw the Pirates (14-1) – No. 3 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings – win their fourth straight state title. Belfry became the sixth school to accomplish the feat, joining Highlands (2007-12), Boyle County (1999-2003), Trinity (2005-08), Beechwood (1991-94) and Mayfield (2012-15).

“I’m just overwhelmed,” said Belfry coach Philip Haywood, who added to his state-record total with his 417th career victory. “Winning the championship is always big, but to do this four times, very few teams in the state of Kentucky have done that. That’s always been their goal, and this is a great senior class.”

Derek Wellman led the Pirates with 195 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Cameron Catron (six carries, 106 yards, one TD) and Taveon Hunter (five carries, 92 yards, two TDs) also had big games as Belfry averaged 8.8 yards per carry.

They were aided by an offensive line that features four seniors expected to play college football – Austin Dotson (6 feet 7, 320 pounds), Cole Bentley (6-5, 305), Jordan Scott (6-3, 295) and Rayquan Horton (6-2, 316). Dotson (Kentucky) and Bentley (Louisville) already have committed to colleges.

“That doesn’t come along too often,” Haywood said. “We’ll have a big kid every now and then that will go on and play, but we have four kids this year who have offers and that’s rare for a school our size where we’re located to all come through at one time.”

Central was forced to go to the air and senior quarterback James Simpson completed 19 of 38 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns. Rico White (eight catches, 95 yards, two TDs) and U’Kari Baker (seven catches, 187 yards, one TD) were the top receivers.

But Simpson also was intercepted three times, and Central’s rushing attack was limited to 84 yards on 30 carries (2.8 yards per attempt).

“We didn’t expect them to shut our run game down … so that was kind of disappointing,” Central coach Ty Scroggins said.

Catron (58 yards) and Wellman (64 yards) both had long touchdown runs in the first quarter, and Austin Woolum’s 29-yard field goal gave the Pirates a 17-7 halftime advantage.

Wellman’s second touchdown run – a 1-yarder – made it 31-7 with 2:21 left in the third quarter.

“I had no doubt we were going to drive the ball down the field,” Wellman said. “We have one of the best offensive lines in the state, and they proved it tonight. They don’t get credit a lot, but I want to give them all the credit for opening the holes I got tonight.”

Hunter’s 47-yard touchdown run made it 38-7 with 6:29 remaining and sparked a wild finish that featured 45 combined points. Simpson threw three late touchdown passes, the last one pulling Central within 45-31 with 30 seconds left.

But on the ensuing onside kick, Catron fielded the bouncing ball in stride and returned it 46 yards for the final score of the game.

Scroggins said Belfry’s offensive line lived up to its billing.

“They’re bigger than every team in Jefferson County, bigger than any team we’ve played, for sure,” Scroggins said. “We expected to be a grind-it-out game because we expected to get more stops. You can’t give up two long runs and expect to stay in the game. We just didn’t defend tonight, and they’re a better team than us.”

In the state final for the seventh time in 10 years, Central dropped to 5-2, having also lost to Belfry 14-7 in the 2014 championship game. Central defeated Belfry for the titles in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Scroggins said the loss will be toughest for his 15 seniors.

“They’re going to be sad … and if you’re an athlete and a warrior you shouldn’t be out here if you’re not sad,” Scroggins said. “We’ll mend it, and the sun will come out tomorrow and we’ll celebrate a runner-up trophy.”

* At halftime, the Kentucky Football Coaches Association named Central’s Corey Johnson the Class 3-A Player of the Year and Lexington Catholic’s Mark Perry the Class 3-A Coach of the Year.

Trinity beats Lafayette for record 24th state title - Blackburn throws four TD passes, rushes for two more scores

Trinity quarterback Spencer Blackburn keeps it for a run during the first quarter of the Class 6-A State Championship between Trinity and Lafayette at L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky. Dec. 3, 2016

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In four seasons with the Trinity High School football program, running back Jovan Smith said no off-season was tougher than the last off-season.

Spurred by a loss to Male in the third round of the playoffs last year, Shamrocks coach Bob Beatty wanted his team to be tougher and started the process in January.

“I didn’t know Coach Beatty could get that tough,” Smith said. “Practices were harder. We went four days a week in the hot summer. It was a grind, and we fought through it. It made us stronger and faster and tougher.”

The Shamrocks got their ultimate reward Saturday night, getting a test from Lafayette before scoring the final 29 points in a 56-21 victory in the Class 6-A state championship game.

A crowd of 7,253 at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium saw the Shamrocks reach all kinds of milestones:

* The 24th state title broke a tie with Highlands for the most in Kentucky history.

* Beatty became the first coach in state history to win 12 state titles, breaking a tie with Highlands’ Dale Mueller.

* Trinity became the 17th program in state history – and the quickest – to reach 600 victories, improving its all-time record to 600-160-7.

* The Shamrocks finished 15-0, completing their first undefeated season since 2011.

Beatty loathes discussing such milestones but did relent a bit when pushed on the topic.

“It’s really nice to not be tied with Highlands for the most state championships anymore,” he said.

Trinity quarterback Spencer Blackburn finished his career with a flourish, completing 14 of 16 passes for 222 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 110 yards and two scores on 11 carries.

Smith added 100 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Junior Rondale Moore, the speedy transfer from New Albany who electrified the Trinity offense during the playoffs, had seven receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.

Lafayette quarterback Walker Wood, a University of Kentucky commit, completed 13 of 17 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown before going out of the game with a knee injury early in the fourth quarter.

Some Lafayette fans and players contended the hit on Wood was late, and his injury escalated the tension in an already heated contest that included 31 penalties – Trinity with 17 for 186 yards and Lafayette with 14 for 140 yards.

The teams did not exchange handshakes when the game was over.

“It hard to see your brother go down like that, late hit or legal hit,” Generals coach Eric Shaw said of his team’s emotions after Wood’s injury. “It’s still hard to see that. That’s how much they love one another.”

After falling to Male 41-14 in last year’s state final and losing to Trinity 45-7 earlier this season, Lafayette provided tougher competition Saturday. Wood’s 51-yard touchdown pass to Quinten Brown brought the Generals within 27-21 with 9:08 left in the third quarter.

But Trinity needed little time to respond, marching 61 yards in seven plays and taking a 34-21 lead on Smith’s 9-yard touchdown run.

Trinity’s Robbie Lewis recovered a fumble on Lafayette’s next possession, setting up Blackburn’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Noah Ellison. Smith’s two-point conversion run gave Trinity a 42-21 lead at the 3:36 mark of the third quarter.

“We came out playing their game and their tempo, but once we play our game and our tempo no one in the state can compete with us,” Blackburn said.

The Generals (13-2) finished with three turnovers, compared with two for Trinity.

“Turnovers were the key,” Shaw said. “Those turnovers stalled drives and gave them great field position. You can’t give them great field position. They’re too good to play them on a short field.”

Smith’s 15-yard TD run and Blackburn’s 71-yard touchdown pass to Moore completed the scoring in the fourth quarter.

The victory capped the ninth undefeated season in Trinity history.

“We won it back in 2014, and it felt great,” Smith said. “But there’s something about being 15-0. It has a ring to it.”

* At halftime, the Kentucky Football Coaches Association named Cooper’s Dante Hendrix the Class 6-A Player of the Year and Ryle’s Mike Engler the Class 6-A Coach of the Year.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Maybe it was jitters or the cold weather or the rain, but the Christian Academy football team wasn’t itself during the first half of Sunday’s Russell Athletic Class 2-A state championship game.

The Centurions led 2-0 at halftime but managed just two first downs and 63 yards of offense over the first 24 minutes of action.

“The mood in there was so down,” coach Stefan LeFors said of the locker room at halftime. “It was like we were down 28-0.”

But with the help of two stellar sophomores, the Centurions found their groove in the second half and picked up the first state title in school history.

Austin Carr threw a pair of touchdown passes to Milton Wright and Wright added a TD pass of his own as CAL defeated Danville 24-6 in front of 5,169 fans at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

A CAL program that began varsity play in 1998 and lost its first 15 games now can call itself a state champion.

“It’s crazy,” said Wright, who finished the season with 27 touchdowns. “It’s a great feeling to say, ‘Hey, my seniors got to go out on top. My family got to go out on top.’ It’s pretty cool.”

CAL opened this season with a 41-14 loss to Class 6-A stalwart Simon Kenton before reeling off 14 straight victories.

A 44-14 victory over eventual Class 3-A runner-up Central on Sept. 2 got the Centurions going, and back-to-back victories over 2-A powers DeSales and Mayfield sealed CAL’s first trip to a state final.

“Beating Central the way we did really opened my eyes,” LeFors said. “I knew we had a special bunch, but we still had some young guys in some key spots that had to grow up quick. Throughout the course of the year they got better, better and better and capped off a great season with a state championship.”

But it came with some struggle Sunday.

CAL punted on its first four possession and managed to get on the scoreboard first only after a high snap on a Danville punt attempt went through the end zone, giving the Centurions a 2-0 lead at the 9:09 mark of the second quarter.

Danville (12-3) managed 119 yards of offense in the first half but missed two field-goal tries and had a pass intercepted by CAL’s Ryan Lagestee.

Wright credited the coaching staff with lifting the team’s spirits during halftime.

“It was like, ‘Hey, we have something to do, and we have to do it right now,’” Wright said. “The coaches showed leadership and said, ‘We’re going to change this, this and this, and we’re going to get the job done.’”

Anteneh Thompson got CAL going by returning the opening kickoff of the second half 38 yards to the Danville 47-yard line. Six plays later Carr found Wright on a post route for a 27-yard touchdown pass. Wright bounced off two Danville defenders at the 10-yard line before getting into the end zone.

“Milton is one of the best receivers in in the state, and we work well together,” Carr said. “We’ve been working for this since the seventh grade, so I knew when coach called the play who I was going to throw to.”

Another safety gave CAL an 11-0 lead with 4:26 left in the third quarter, and 31 seconds later Carr hit Wright for a 45-yard touchdown pass and a 17-0 lead.

“It was a tale of two halves,” Danville coach Clay Clevenger said. “In the first half we were able to move the ball some and were in pretty good down and distance and field position, and we weren’t able to capitalize. In the third quarter it was flipped and they got us backed up and we made some mistakes, and they were able to capitalize.”

CAL put the game away early in the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-goal at the 7-yard line, Wright lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat formation. He rolled to his right and found Nick Weaver for a touchdown pass and a 24-0 lead.

It was the second TD pass of the season for the versatile Wright, who scored touchdowns multiple ways throughout the year (17 receiving, four punt returns, three interception returns, two kickoff returns and one rushing).

“Coach called a little pass play, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, let’s do it then,’” Wright said with a smile. “I’m glad I got to get the ball to Nick Weaver, and he got the job done.”

For LeFors, the former University of Louisville quarterback, it was a thrilling finish to his sixth season as CAL’s head coach.

“You hear so many other champions say it: ‘Once you get that first one you’re so much more hungry for the next one,’ so I am,” LeFors said. “But I definitely want to enjoy this one with these guys.”

Johnson Central rolls past Franklin-Simpson in 4-A final

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Embarrassed last year in its first-ever trip to a state final, the Johnson Central High School football team found redemption Sunday night.

Joe Jackson rushed for three touchdowns and the Golden Eagles rolled up 344 rushing yards in a 48-0 rout of Franklin-Simpson in the Russell Athletic Class 4-A state championship game in front of 6,358 fans at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

Johnson Central (14-1) lost to South Warren 36-6 in last year’s 4-A final and used that as motivation this season.

“We felt like we let everybody in the mountains down last year,” Golden Eagles coach Jim Matney said. “This is important to our county and for everybody who has ever put on a black-and-gold jersey.”

Jackson scored on runs of 19, 29 and 5 yards as Johnson Central built a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Riley Preece’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Geordan Blanton and two-point conversion pass to Noah Frisby gave the Golden Eagles a 36-0 lead with 1:08 left in the first half and started the mercy-rule running clock for the rest of the game.

Blake Gamble led Johnson Central with 90 rushing yards on five carries, and Jackson added 85 yards on 15 attempts.

Matney also praised a defense that limited Franklin-Simpson to one first down and 18 total yards. Matney said he changed his program’s defensive philosophy the day after last year’s loss to South Warren.

“It’s been lights out almost ever since,” said Matney, whose squad allowed just 15 total points over five playoff games and finished with three straight shutouts. “We recognized we were trying to do a couple of real complicated things … and needed to change to a speedier defense. Things got simpler and became crystal clear for our kids.”

Josiah Robey was the top rusher for the Wildcats (14-1) with 25 yards on six carries.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The most prolific scorer in Bowling Green High School football history, Jamale Carothers ended his career with a bang Sunday night.

The senior running back scored five touchdowns – four rushing and one receiving – as the Purples whipped Pulaski County 70-22 in the Russell Athletic Class 5-A state championship game in front of 6,352 fans at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

Bowling Green set a record for points in a state final, surpassing the mark set by Trinity in its 62-21 victory over Scott County in the 2011 Class 6-A final.

Carothers, who has committed to Navy, finished his career with 514 points to rank 23rd in state history. On Sunday he carried 18 times for 128 yards and also had five receptions for 111 yards.

Bowling Green (15-0) won its second straight 5-A title and its fifth in the past six years. The Purples also have the state’s longest current winning streak at 27 games, their last loss coming to St. Xavier (45-19) last season.

After Bowling Green jumped to a 22-8 lead, Pulaski County’s Wiley Cain threw a pair of touchdown passes to pull the Maroons (12-3) even at 22 by halftime. But Bowling Green dominated the second half with 48 straight points and finished the game with 410 yards of offense.

Purples quarterback Clark Payne completed 15 of 22 passes for 278 yards and two scores. Cain was 24 for 42 for 187 yards and two scores.

KHSAA rules Waggener's De'Von Cooper ineligible

$

De’Von Cooper, the 6-foot-4 senior guard ranked among the top players in Kentucky, had his eligibility appeal denied by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association on Monday, Waggener High School athletic director Jamie Dumstorf said.

Cooper averaged 17.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a game as a sophomore at Waggener during the 2014-15 season before transferring to Henderson (Nevada) Findlay Prep for his junior season. He averaged 7.0 points per game at Findlay Prep before transferring back to Waggener this summer.

According to Dumstorf, the KHSAA hearing officer ruled Cooper did not qualify for any of the exceptions under KHSAA Bylaw 6, which requires an athlete to sit out a calendar year after transferring.

Dumstorf said the Cooper family still can choose to appeal to KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett to overturn the ruling of the hearing officer.

Cooper was the No. 20-ranked player in Kentucky in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches. Colleges showing interest in Cooper are IUPUI, Kent State, Toledo, Western Kentucky, Wright State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Morehead State, Ball State and New Orleans.

Could state football finals move to UK or U of L? - KHSAA commissioner discusses possibility of moving from WKU

Commissioner Julian Tackett said the KHSAA will begin discussions soon about where to host the state football finals in the future. Associated Press photo.

Last weekend marked the second straight year the Kentucky High School Athletic Association was forced to adjust its schedule for the state football championships because of a conflict with the Conference USA championship game at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green.

The KHSAA’s current contract to host the football finals in Bowling Green runs through 2018, but questions have arisen about the future of the site given the possibility of future conflicts.

KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett addressed these concerns with The Courier-Journal on Sunday night.

* Courier-Journal: Is the KHSAA reassessing its current contract with WKU because of the possibility of conflicts in 2017 and 2018?

* Tackett: I think it’s already at that point. We had a discussion with the (KHSAA Board of Control) in November. Our board technically sets the sites, and I said, “You know, I’m not saying we change and I’m not lobbying we change. I think we need to have a discussion about options and what we have going forward.” Even if we’re just thinking about 2019 and beyond, we’re being irresponsible if we don’t start talking. … I think (WKU) would tell you if their university’s success means we need to look at something else, I don’t think it’s all that problematic for them. I think it’s good for both of us.

* C-J: Would you have other options for hosting in 2017 and 2018 if you decided to break the current contract with WKU?

* Tackett: I think you have to look long-term. We have an agreement to host down here, but it’s flexible for both of us in terms of scheduling. It depends on what we find out. We have to do some exploration. We really have to do some soul-searching discussions with the board. The board that 8-10 years ago awarded the long-term deal (at WKU) has been totally turned over. We have to get feedback from our schools and from our football advisory committee, which is a critical group. It’s time to have that discussion.

* C-J: How big of an issue have the schedule changes over the last two years been for the schools involved?

* Tackett: We heard hardly nothing at all this week. One of the Class A schools expressed some concerns, and I think they were very narrow-scoped to their issues. So, maybe our schools aren’t bothered by this. They spend four weeks finding out on Sunday or Monday when they play next. So, what’s a fifth? At the same time, are you really going to continue to build an event this way?

* C-J: How would you address the history of moving the football finals from Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville because of a similar conflict you’re now facing at WKU?

* Tackett: It is no different than the situation we had with the Big East Conference. And after a couple of years of that problem and their former coach – who we couldn’t work with on the scheduling – we had that evaluation and had to move it. At the same time, some of those people who are so pro-Louisville weren’t coming to the games in Louisville. They’re just complaining that they’re not there.

* C-J: What are your thoughts on the other possible sites – the University of Louisville’s Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium and the University of Kentucky’s Commonwealth Stadium?

* Tackett: It’s tough because possible alternative sites are so enormous compared to the size of our crowds. Those old all-star games in the summer that had a thousand people in a 50,000 seat stadium, those thoughts are still popping into all of our coaches’ heads. Is that the atmosphere we really want for a state championship?

* C-J: Is Eastern Kentucky University’s Roy Kidd Stadium a viable option?

* Tackett: I don’t think so physical-plant-wise, but I think they have it under development. (EKU athletic director Stephen Lochmueller) has asked that I make some time to talk to them before we actually go out and look for sites. They have some issues in town with housing, but they’re trying to develop some more hotels. This event uses up a lot of rooms, and it’s not something every city can handle.

* C-J: How big of an issue is securing a title sponsor in Louisville or Lexington like you have with Russell Athletic in Bowling Green?

* Tackett: We have a sponsorship that underwrites almost all of the team travel for this event. That’s huge. We’ve never had that from anybody else. There’s only so much the universities can do because they’re all prospective student-athletes and they have NCAA rules to worry about. So you have to involve your tourism commission and your housing people and your sponsors. Somebody has to step up.

Mercy Academy senior guard Josie Woods

Mercy Academy senior guard Josie Woods

Earlier this week Mercy Academy basketball coach Keith Baisch entered his team’s locker room and found senior Josie Woods helping one of her freshman teammates with homework.

According to Baisch, that was just another example of the leadership Woods has shown early this season. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard, who is in her third season on the varsity team, has fully embraced that role this season after deferring to previous seniors – including her older sister, Madi, last season – according to her coach.

“She’s really grown as a leader,” Baisch said. “I think the past couple years, having a sister a year ahead of her, she kind of sat back and let Madi have her limelight. Now it’s time for Josie to step up.”

Woods is the top returning scorer for the Jaguars, who were ranked No. 13 in The Courier-Journal’s preseason coaches poll. She averaged 9.3 points per game – second only to her sister’s 11.8 ppg – and 4.2 rebounds per game last season for Mercy, which lost to eventual state champion Butler in the Sixth Region Tournament final. She also tied her sister for the team lead in made 3-pointers (49).

Tuesday night Woods tallied a game-high 15 points – single-handedly outscoring the Jags’ foe – in an 80-10 win over Jeffersontown.

Q: When did you start playing basketball?

A: I started playing basketball in pre-K. When I was little I played just about everything, my parents got me in just about every single sport. I liked basketball the best. Then I started playing AAU here in fifth grade.

Q: What was it like playing in the Sweet 16 your sophomore year?

A: That was crazy. I only got to play in the last few minutes of the game (a loss to Male), but it was a really good experience.

Q: Besides going to State, what have been some of the other highlights of your career?

A: Last year’s game against Highlands in the Raatz Fence (Classic). I think I hit five (actually seven) 3-pointers in that game. And also beating Assumption.

Q: Mercy’s style of play is kind of unique. How would you describe it?

A: A lot of the times we’re go, go, go, we run and press. It’s kind of hectic, but that’s the way we like it.

Q: Do you like it?

A: I get so bored when it’s just halfcourt. I love pressing!

Q: Do you want to play basketball in college?

A: I don’t know yet.

Q: What do you plan on majoring in?

A: I want to be a nurse practitioner, so I’m going to major in nursing.

Q: Why that field?

A: I always really wanted to be neonatal doctor, then I realized that’s a lot of school.

Q: What’s the goal this season?

A: The goals for the season are, one, to win the district. We have a good rivalry with Bullitt East (which beat Mercy in last season’s district final) in the district. And, two, to get to the regional final. We know we’ll have to work hard to get to the regional final, then if we do we’ll probably have to play Bullitt East or Butler so we know it will be a tough game.

JOSIE WOODS UP CLOSE

School: Mercy

Year: Senior

Sport: Basketball

Student-athlete: Josie, who has a 3.98 GPA, is a member of FBLA, Ambassadors, Student Council, MAT, NHS and NSHS at Mercy. She says her favorite class is Calculus.

Mercy coach Keith Baisch says: “Josie’s a kid who last year started getting playing time and started to come around. This year she’s one of the big leaders. We’re really looking for her scoring as far as being a leader, and that’s something she’s embraced.”

Out more than two weeks with an ingrown thumbnail that required surgery, Butler High School guard Jaquay Wales was worried he wouldn’t get to play Friday against rival Pleasure Ridge Park.

So when doctors cleared him to play Wednesday, Wales was more than excited.

“Coach didn’t tell me until Thursday that I was going to be playing, so I was surprised and a little nervous,” Wales said.

Wales looked comfortable on the court Friday, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half and overtime as the Bears rallied to beat PRP 59-55 at Valley High School.

PHOTO GALLERY | PRP vs. Butler

A 5-foot-11 point guard, Wales was Butler’s No. 2 scorer (10 ppg) and top assist man (6 apg) last season but hadn’t played this season while nursing the thumb injury on his non-shooting left hand.

“It just gives us energy,” Bears coach K.C. Goodin said. “He plays so hard, and he’s been in this game for three years now so he’s not afraid of the stage.”

Senior guard Marcus Montgomery added 16 points as Butler improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 squad also started 5-0.

“It’s good for the guys to have success … and to be 5-0, I’m excited,” Goodin said. “At the same time, it’s early December. It matters, but it doesn’t matter at this point. It excites me to see them smiling and having fun.”

Junior guard Trey Hill scored 22 points to lead the Panthers (3-1), No. 15 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches.

PRP has been hampered by injuries and illness this season, as starters Gerald Gray (wrist injury) and Darius Osborne (asthma) and sixth man Micah Kennebrew (foot injury) al; missed Friday’s game. Coach Dale Mabrey said Osborne could return soon but that Gray and Kennebrew might not return until after Christmas.

PRP struggled from the free-throw line (22 for 39) and missed 25 layups according to Mabrey’s count.

“I can’t be down on the kids right now,” he said. “The way we battled, I’m super pleased. … This was more like a game in March than it was in December, and we shot ourselves in the foot. You can’t miss 17 free throws and 25 layups and beat a team as skilled as they are.”

Still, PRP was in control for much of the contest and led 47-39 on Logan Hudson’s putback basket with 4:25 left in regulation.

But Wales took over from there, getting an old-fashioned 3-point play, a 3-pointer and a layup during a 10-2 run that tied the score at 49 with 1:06 left.

“I played in this game the last two years, so I’m used to the environment,” Wales said. “I just had to make plays. … Thanks to my teammates setting screens and stuff, I found a way to get open.”

After the teams traded free throws in the final minute, PRP had the final shot to win in regulation but Malik Bunzy’s 3-point try was off.

Kel’Shawn Mozee’s layup off the tip gave Butler a 52-50 overtime lead it didn’t relinquish. The Bears hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the game.

Along with Wales and Montgomery, Goodin was pleased by the play of 6-foot-8 junior reserve Michael Burns, who had five points and five blocked shots.

“We weren’t playing well in the first half, and I give PRP credit for that,” Goodin said. “But we made some adjustments and made some plays, and the kids didn’t hang their heads. I liked the way we stood up and fought and were able to get it done.”

Sacred Heart beats Simon Kenton in overtime

The Sacred Heart basketball team made a statement on Sunday that it is a legitimate contender for a regional title and a trip to the Kentucky High School Sweet 16.

Facing one of the top teams in the eighth region, Simon Kenton, at the Titan Classic in Mercer Co. the Valkyries won 84-76 in overtime.

“It was actually really fun to play this early in the season, the fourth game, and Simon Kenton is prob the top team in the Eighth Region,” Sacred Heart coach Donna Moir said. “It was a good atmosphere and then with us it was good to play them early.”

Freshman guard Erin Toller came off the bench to score 19 points, while junior guard Grace Berger secured a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.

“She’s just steady,” Moir said of Berger. “Grace brings it every day and she got in there and really rebounded. She played really good defense, had a couple of steals for some layups and was really composed on the floor tonight.”

Junior guard Allyson Niece led the Pioneers with 25 points and six rebounds.

The Valkyries held a 39-34 lead at halftime, but the lead changed four times in the fourth quarter and there were five ties in the second half as both teams went back and forth. Berger scored six points in the fourth quarter and provided a pair of crucial assists, while Niece kept the Pioneers close with eight points.

Her biggest play came perhaps in the final seconds of the quarter, providing the assist on Shelby Harmeyer’s game-tying 3-pointer to make it 72-72 at the end of regulation.

Even after losing the lead in the final seconds, the Valkyries came out strong in overtime. They went on a 12-2 run until a late Kendyl Gilliam putback was the final basket of the game for the Pioneers.

“I think it’s a good measuring point,” Moir said. “It’s important that we won a close game on the road. We were up three and they hit a shot at the buzzer to tie it up. We came out in overtime and scored the first few points in overtime. I thought they way they rebounded and competed was really good and I thought we showed a lot of maturity with that.”

On Saturday, in the final day of competition in the 2016 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships, Forde set a meet record in the 200 yard breaststroke finals, finishing with a time of 2:09.12. Forde broke Allison Raab’s record of 2:09.69. Raab finished second to Forde in the 200 yard breastroke on Saturday as well with a time of 2:09.86.

Forde later on Saturday finished in second place in the 200 yard butterfly finals with a time of 1:57.00.

“She’s been pretty sharp all fall,” Lakeside Seahawks head coach Mike DeBoor said. “She set out going to Tokyo and Hong Kong (at the 2016 FINA World Cup) and that helped her gain confidence and sharpness. I think that was a big boost and that carried on (into now). She’s a really confident young lady and is really talented. I don’t think anything she did was unexpected but she’s going to continue to improve and continue to see results.”

Cardinal Aquatics’ Nicholas Albiero had another memorable day as well, with two podium finishes. He finished in third-place by just 23 hundredths of a second in the 200 yard backstroke finals with a time of 1:45.15, and then lost by an even tighter margin, 11 hundredths of a second, in the 200 yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:44.21.

Through the whole competition, Albiero broke USA Swimming state meet records in the 15-18 year old age group in the 200 yard individual medley, 100 yard backstroke, 200 yard backstroke, 100 yard butterfly and 200 yard butterfly.

His sister Gabriela Albiero broke state meet records for the 13-14 year old age group in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle. Gabriela Albiero finished in first place of the consolation final in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.78 and in sixth place of the consolation final of the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 50.18.
