Season preview | Trinity Shamrocks

Trinity High School Coach Bob Beatty and members of the team look ahead to the 2016 Louisville-area high school football season at Media Day 2016 at Churchill Downs and sponsored by The Courier-Journal.

TRINITY (11-2 in 2015)

Coach: Bob Beatty (17th season, 192-34).

Starters back: Offense 1, defense 3.

Class: 6-A, District 4.

Player to watch: Sophomore defensive end Stephon Herron (6-4, 220 pounds) will make an instant impact after transferring from New Albany. Herron posted 75 tackles, including five sacks, and blocked three kicks as a freshman at New Albany and already has scholarship offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana and Tennessee.

Other top players: QB Spencer Blackburn (Sr.), RB Jovan Smith (Sr.), RB Roderick Thomas (Sr.), WR Barron Hoffman (Sr.), WR Jovel Smith (Sr.), WR Noah Ellison (Sr.), OL Kyle Liebert (Sr.), DL Jermaine Jackson (Sr.), DL Arack McDuffey (Jr.), DB Luke Eskins (Sr.), DB Zyan Bethel (Sr.).

Outlook: There will be a lot of new faces in the starting lineup this season, but there’s also a lot of talent among those new faces. Blackburn has played quarterback in the Trinity system since he was a freshman and brings a steady hand to the position. Jovan Smith and Thomas are complementary backs who both will get plenty of carries, and the receiving corps is deep. With Herron, Jackson and McDuffey, the defensive line may be the state’s best, and Eskins and Bethel provide leadership in the secondary. Trinity enters the season ranked No. 19 in the nation in USA Today’s preseason Super 25.
