The only undefeated squad in the state, the Greenup County baseball squad now holds the No. 1 ranking in the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Top 20.

The Musketeers are 24-0 entering a 6 p.m. game Monday against Russell.

Greenup County is 14-0 against Kentucky competition and 10-0 against out-of-state foes, including teams from Ohio, West Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Greenup County’s most impressive showing may have come April 7 during a Spring Break trip to Vero Beach, Fla. The Musketeers beat defending state champion West Jessamine 8-4 and perennial power Pleasure Ridge Park 11-6.

Greenup County ran its winning streak to 24 on Saturday with a 14-4 whipping of No. 10 Beechwood.

Greenup County was the state runner-up to PRP in 1996 and reached the state semifinals last year before falling to Highlands. The Musketeers returned every player from last season’s squad, including senior catcher Brody Shoupe (Morehead State signee) and sophomore shortstop Gage Hughes (Cincinnati commit).
