Quentin Goodin’s high school career came to an end Friday as his Taylor County High School basketball team lost to Doss 69-58 in the quarterfinals of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Goodin hit 3 of 10 shots and finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Goodin, a Xavier University signee, has been one of the top storylines of the tournament after Owen County’s Carson Williams was named Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball on Tuesday. Goodin, also a top candidate for Mr. Basketball, was named the Gatorade Kentucky Boys Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday.

After Friday’s loss, Taylor County coach Richard Gatewood spoke on Goodin. Here is the transcript of his comments:

“This is the thing that gets me: People don’t want to vote for him because they dislike me or our program. When you get a kid like this, he plays once every 20 to 25 years. He could have went to any prep school in the country. Everybody blew him up. For him to stay at home and play at Taylor County, where he was raised, he should get a round of applause for that. Kid could have went to anywhere in the country.

“The thing with Mr. Basketball, Carson definitely deserved it. He was a phenomenal player, a phenomenal year. But when you talk about a guy for four years that’s played against top-notch competition and could have went anywhere in the country, you can’t hold that against him because of me or our program.

“I just want you all to know this guy was blessed with God-given ability, and he could have went anywhere in the country. But he decided to stay home in his home state and try to put Kentucky on the map.”
