All 16 girls regional tournaments are down to four teams, and there haven’t been many upsets to this point. No. 20 Monroe County is the only top-20 team that has been eliminated so far.
One key girls game Tuesday night saw Jenkins defeat Perry County Central 75-65 in a 14th Region quarterfinal, keeping alive Whitney Creech’s quest to reach the Sweet 16. Creech, a Western Kentucky University signee, scored 59 points to increase her state-record career total to 5,428 points. Jenkins (17-14) will face host Powell County (16-10) in a regional semifinal at 8 p.m. Friday.
Most boys regionals will get going Wednesday night, and there are two huge games on the slate. In the Eighth Region at Henry County, No. 19 Owen County (29-3) will face South Oldham (25-5). And in the 11th Region at Eastern Kentucky University, No. 6 Scott County (27-5) will face Madison Central (20-11).
Owen County beat South Oldham 78-75 on Feb. 13. Scott County and Madison Central did not meet during the regular season.
