The Pleasure Ridge Park High School girls basketball team used a 20-7 run in the third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat visiting Doss 84-69 on Monday in the first round of the Sixth Region Tournament.
The Panthers move on to face defending regional champion Mercy at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Valley High School in the semifinals.
“I think it will be good for the kids,” PRP coach David Meadows said. “It will be the first time in the tournament that we’ll be the heavy underdog, and I think our kids will be excited to play.”
The Dragons (15-13) held a 51-42 lead at the midway point, but the Panthers (22-8) made defensive halftime adjustments and Carnethia Brown, who missed a majority of the first half with foul trouble, went on to score a game-high 25 points. Perri Mitchell scored 21 points and snagged 13 rebounds.
“We were sluggish (in the first half), and they played really well,” Meadows said. “They were shooting the ball well. It seemed like everything they were doing was going in. We had been pressing and playing man and we played a 3-2 zone in the second half.”
April Sanders led the Dragons with 19 points.
Butler 77, Bullitt Central 28: host The Bearettes (25-5) won their eighth straight game with ease as they cruised past the Cougars (13-16). Jaelynn Penn scored 18 points for Butler, which built a 55-15 halftime lead and never looked back.
Butler will face Bullitt East in Wednesday’s 8:15 p.m. semifinal at Valley.
Bullitt East 83, Fairdale 58: University of Kentucky commit Lindsey Duvall scored a game-high 25 points as the host Chargers (21-5) knocked off the Bulldogs (16-13). The Chargers outscored the Bulldogs 40-20 in the second and third quarters combined.
