Union County High School had 10 wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals and led the team standings after Friday’s first day of action in the State Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena in Lexington, Ky.
Union County had 85 points after the first two rounds were completed in the championship and consolation rounds.
Oldham County was second with 66.5 points. The Colonels had five wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals – Jacob Henley (138 pounds), Brady Emerson (152), Lucas Carrillo (160), Max Emerson (182) and Daniel Kimbell (195).
Woodford County was third in the team standings with 53.5 points, followed by North Oldham (52.5) and St. Xavier (52). Trinity was 10th with 46.5 points.
Four No. 1-ranked individuals from Louisville clinched spots in the quarterfinals – St. Xavier’s Nate Wheeler (106 pounds), Trinity’s Keegan Duncan (132) and Hudson Heidorf (160) and Iroquois’ Brandon Reed (220).
Wrestling will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday with quarterfinals. Championship matches are set for 6 p.m.
