Fans voted Bullitt East girls basketball player Alyssa Peak the winner of The Courier-Journal Metro Louisville Athlete of the Week Award presented by Norton Sports Health.
She was named MVP of the Queen of Palms Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla., after helping the Chargers win the championship, beating Hialeah (Fla.) 67-45 in the final on Dec. 30. Peak averaged 13 points in three tournament victories.
Last week’s other nominees included North Bullitt’s Ryan Henson, North Oldham wrestling’s John Reitnauer and Sacred Heart’s Kiki Samsel.
Henson hit seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead the Eagles to a 65-56 victory over host LaRue County in the championship game of the Hawks Holiday Classic on Dec. 30.
Reitnauer won the 152-pound weight class and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler while helping the Mustangs take the team title at Saturday’s Valley Main Event.
Samsel hit a school-record eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points in an 83-53 victory over Presentation on Saturday.
Each Monday afternoon, four new athletes will be posted here as nominees for the Athlete of the Week Award. Voting runs through 8 p.m. Sunday. The winners will be invited to the year-end Courier-Journal Courier-Journal Kentuckiana Sports Awards Program banquet presented by Norton Sports Health.
