State field hockey tournament | CAL, Manual, Assumption and Sacred Heart advance

The 2015 Kentucky Field Hockey State Championship commenced on Saturday, with Christian Academy, Manual, Assumption and Sacred Heart all nabbing victories.

In the opener, CAL (18-5) topped Collegiate (7-12) 3-2 in overtime to advance to a semifinal bout against Sacred Heart (20-6-1), winner of a 9-0 decision against Presentation (6-13) in the nightcap. Manual (16-4-2) outlasted Ballard (10-9) 3-1 to advance to a meeting with the Rockets (24-1), who topped Mercy (17-10) 4-0.

Claire Thomas’ goal in the 69th minute of OT sealed the win for the Centurians, who also tallied goals from Alexandra Joyner and Taylor Curran. Jacquelyn Wilkins had two assists for CAL. Claire Foley and Rebecca Carney recorded scores for Collegiate.

Jordan Thompson paced Manual with two goals and India Reed posted another for the Crimsons, assisted by Thompson. Katy Law scored the lone goal for the Bruins.

Emma Spinetto lifted Assumption with three goals, two of which were unassisted, and Jenna McKune tallied the other while goalie Shelby Wuest had two saves in the shutout.

SHA cruised behind three goals from Katie Esselman. Lauren Szwarc added two more, and Mattie Tabor, Quincy Hernandez, Lucy Wolz and Aubrey Tabor tacked on one apiece to make the final.

Play resumes Monday, with CAL-SHA at 5:30 p.m. and Manual-Assumption at 7:15 p.m.
