Fans voted Eastern basketball’s Mikayla Kinnard the winner of The Courier-Journal Metro Louisville Athlete of the Week Award presented by Norton Sports Health. The freshman scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half to the lead the Eagles to a 68-58 victory over Sacred Heart.
Last week’s other nominees included Bullitt East’s Tyler Sharpe, Oldham County’s Brandon Johnson and Central’s Devin Firman.
Sharpe posted 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Chargers to a 67-58 win over Waggener on Saturday in the King of the Bluegrass. Johnson scored 15 points to lead the Colonels to a 70-51 victory over Manual in Sunday’s final of the Pegasus Sports Network Best in Hoops Tournament. Firman hit 6 of 10 3-point tries and scored 26 points Saturday in a 90-81 victory over No. 1 Taylor County in the KOB.
Each Monday afternoon, four new athletes will be posted here as nominees for the Athlete of the Week Award. Voting runs through 8 p.m. Sunday. The winners will be invited to the year-end Courier-Journal Courier-Journal Kentuckiana Sports Awards Program banquet presented by Norton Sports Health.
