Saying he wants to pursue opportunities as a teacher and an administrator, Darrell Vincent announced Friday he’s stepping down as the head football coach at Bullitt East High School.

“It’s hard to imagine not doing it, and I imagine I’ll stay involved somewhere behind the scenes,” Vincent said. “But some opportunities have opened up … and they’re hard to pass up.”

Vincent posted a 29-28 record with the Chargers, including a 3-8 mark this season. His 2013 squad finished 11-2 and reached a Class 5-A regional final before falling to John Hardin.

Vincent, a 1987 graduate of Bullitt East, spent 16 seasons as an assistant coach at the school before becoming head coach in 2011.

He plans to stay involved as an engineering teacher and to pursue administrative positions.

“I’ve spent more time with my football players than my wife and family a lot of months,” Vincent said. “I’m going to have opportunities to travel now, and hopefully they’ll be able to go with me on a lot of that stuff.”

Bullitt East athletic director Troy Barr said the school is accepting applications for Vincent’s replacement.
