West Jessamine, Lexington Catholic reach state final

The West Jessamine High School girls soccer team won a penalty-kick shootout to post a 1-0 victory over Simon Kenton on Wednesday in the semifinals of the state tournament at Bryan Station.

West Jessamine won the shootout 4-3, with Delaney Long sealing the victory with her successful kick in the fifth round.

West Jessamine (23-4-1) – ranked No. 8 in the state – won its fourth straight match against a top-four team, having defeated No. 2 Boyle County in the 12th Region final, No. 3 Notre Dame in the Semistate Five game and No. 1 Sacred Heart in the state quarterfinals before eliminating No. 4 Simon Kenton (21-4-1) on Wednesday.

West Jessamine will face No. 16 Lexington Catholic (18-8-2) in Friday’s 5 p.m. championship game at Bryan Station.

Lexington Catholic defeated Owensboro Catholic 2-1 in Wednesday’s other semifinal.

No. 7 Owensboro Catholic (23-4-1) took a 1-0 lead on Kaylee Morris’ goal in the fourth minute, but Lexington Catholic tied it on Cassie Corbett’s goal in the 29th minute.

Lexington Catholic got the game-winner on an own goal in the 50th minute.

Saturday’s final will be a rematch from Sept. 21, when West Jessamine beat Lexington Catholic 3-0.
